Le coucher de Sappho. Charles Gleyre, 1867.
The word lyric originates from the lyre, which originally accompanied lyric poets or ru-ra-ta-e, lyrists in Mycenaean Greek. Almost no visual interpretation of Sappho is present without a lyre, considered an extension of her limbs as the Tenth Muse.
